He Was a Poet and When He Died

from Electronic Music Sampler vol.1 by Istvan Peter B'Racz

/

about

Originally created as a soundtrack for a film, which is where the title comes from, by Mark Saba, I was in an unusual position to create the soundtrack only knowing the text, and the director telling me he will shape the film around the music. So, this was a true collaboration. I asked Joe Drew, a brilliant trumpet player well versed in advanced playing techniques, to come and read through a semi-graphic score. I asked him to remove some of the crooks in the trumpet to create a wet unpredictable sound- not unlike the sound I envisioned when I heard about the trumpets from heaven (I'm not religious, but I was young). I recorded him in my studio, and assembled the work and sent it to Mark. He and I worked to figure out the final timings, and the rest is history.
