about
“Madár Tej” is a Hungarian dessert, and as a child was one of my all-time favorites when my mother would make this. The title translates as “Bird’s Milk”, which I always thought was funny, hence the lightheartedness of this young work. The opening is a direct ripoff from a moment in the Bartok third piano concerto (which I was listening to obsessively at the time), the rest is just young-me having fun knowing that three friends would like to perform it in the future. Its short, sweet and to the point.
This is a juvenile work, I wrote it while I was in high school, while studying in the music program at the Educational Center for the Arts, in New Haven, CT. My teachers then were so very positive, and made it possible to have a performance. Thank you to Eva Pierrou, and Jim Undercofler for encouraging me to write. Thanks to Holly Metzner (flute), Denise Roy (oboe), and Dawn Gibson (Clarinet) for being my laboratory testers, and eventual performers!
I’m publishing this now, after all these years, because I think its cute, and fun. I think its a wonderful thing that now a composer can self-publish, and make a score available to the world. In a way, there’s too much noise out there- but its still amazing. I think that those who want to know this will eventually find it, and if they get any enjoyment out of it, then I feel happy.
If you or a group you are in perform this, or record it, please let me know. I’d love to hear it, or even help coach it (if I’m still on this Earth).
