about
“Olde Tuun PinballMIX2” was written originally years ago, and premiered as a part of a “Bach’s Baroque Blender” concert given with fellow composer and guitarist Alphonse Izzo. The work is an “N-Crypt” of J. S. Bach’s G major two-part Invention which I turned upside down and backwards, then re-keyed it to b minor. I used Bach’s actual notes as larger structural support posts, and filled in the rest with musical connective tissue. The piano has a long solo for the first half, and then unconventionally, the other instrument enters almost halfway through the work, and proceeds to “pinball their way to the end”. In the original score The second half was improvised on notes written on a page with any order, as long as they start at the top of the page, and pinball their way down, listening and reacting to each other.
After some years, I realized that not many instrumentalists would feel comfortable with improvising to this degree, and I was asked by Bill Braun and Sergio Pallottelli to make a flute and piano version that was written out more. This is the “2” in the title.
There are also different transpositions available for various instruments. C-treble Instrument, C-Bass instrument, B’flat instruments, E-flat instruments. If you’d like a specific version for your instrument, let me know.
