about

Personal Review of the performance:

"As one who has the original "In C" LP and has listened to so many awful performances since, I must say that this is a revelation! Beautiful!"
-Dennis Bathory-Kitsz

In 1964, Terry Riley's now super famous "in C." changed the world. It was a moment that influenced a great deal of music following: in the Classical world, the Rock world, as well as electronic music, telescoping all the way up to the present. The over-arching reach of this work cannot be truly understood unless one looks at it through the lens of music history. There have been many papers, books, seminars, documentaries about this work and its gentle composer.

The score is very simple and brilliant: it fits on one page. It has 53 measures of music displayed, separated by space, and numbered. Specific instructions were given to the performers, who would play each measure repeating as many times as they felt- yet staying within a larger "flock" motion of the group. There are no "leaders" or conductors. There is a pulse introduced in the beginning (originally a tape loop), and this pulse plays throughout the work, providing a unifying pulse for the players. When all players have reached the 53rd measure, they slowly drop out one by one, until only the pulse is left. Then shut off to end the work. It can easily last over an hour.

What you are listening to is a live performance by Istvan Peter B'Racz (aka effin_izzy) on Twitch. He performed each of the 53 measures in for 16 differing "players" and triggered each measure using an APC 40+20 controller in Ableton LIVE. This 50+ minute performance had limitations of time, otherwise it could have gone on longer.

Recorded live in The Dungeon Music Studio in Hamden, CT USA while broadcasting on Twitch.
